The Trunkline

The Greater Augusta Utility District treats wastewater from the communities of Augusta, Hallowell, Manchester, Monmouth and Winthrop.  Sewage from homeowners, commercial establishments and industries is collected through a system of underground pipes that flow into a collection system.  The collection system sends the wastewater to a system of pumping stations including small grinder pumps along the lake, 3 small submersible pump stations, 10 medium sized pump stations throughout the greater Augusta area and six large “trunkline” pumping stations that are part of an inter-community operation and maintenance agreement.

District personnel maintain the following stations:

  • a trunkline station located in Winthrop on Rte 202 (The old Winthrop primary wastewater treatment plant.)

  • three stations in Manchester (one on Rte 202, one next to the golf course off Pond Road, one next to the Augusta Country Club Beach.)

  • a large station servicing Hallowell, located next to the railroad bridge

  • one in Augusta that can be seen from the Maine Turnpike.

All the collected wastewater is pumped to the wastewater treatment plant on Jackson Avenue for treatment before being discharged into the Kennebec River.
