Wastewater Process Schematic |
|
Augusta Water and Sanitary District operates a sewer collection system, stormwater system and a secondary wastewater treatment plant that accepts wastewater from four other communities (the Trunkline). The plant treats wastewater and some stormwater. The treatment process helps keep the Kennebec River clean. Located on the Kennebec River along the Kennebec River Rail Trail, the Augusta Water and Sanitary District's Wastewater Treatment facility is a pure oxygen activated, secondary treatment plant. The plant treats an average of 4 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater, with flows reaching 40 MGD during rain storms. Take a look at the drawing below.
Wastewater enters the treatment plant from the east and west side of the Kennebec River through large pipes called interceptors. Wastewater receives primary and secondary treatment and disinfection (from May to October) before being discharged to the Kennebec River. Wastewater treatment is regulated under the Clean Water Act and enforced by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. |
